Aug 1, 2018Brokmeier died on Saturday July 28, 2018 at his home following a battle with cancer at the age of 80 years old. Eugene Lyle Brokmeier was born on Feb. 5, 1938 to Albert and Adeline (Dorr) Brokmeier in Walworth County, Wisconsin. He grew up on the family farm in rural Whitewater and whenever a neighbor, whose first name was Gus, would stop by Eugene would follow him around. Eugene soon became known as “little Gus,” a name that stuck with him for life. Gus attended Whitewater Elementary school and began attending Whitewater High School. After dropping out of high school he later in life obtained his GED. During his younger years he was involved in 4-H and received the Grand Champion Showmanship Award at the State Fair. God blessed their union with six children. Gus worked at Wayne Hayes Trucking Company, The Fertilizer Company, Hausz Brothers, and the Larson Canning Company until 1967 when he started a long career with Abendroth Water Conditioning with Pat and Curt Abendroth. He was known by many in the surrounding area as “Gus” from Abendroth’s. He worked for them for 40 years – taking one year off to try over the road trucking for Butler/Jamesway. He retired from Abendroth’s in February of 2008. In recent years Gus fixed lawn mowers and snow blowers for interested people and was known for his weekly appointments at Bienfang’s and Soup’s On. For decades Gus also continued his love for farm life raising crops and livestock on Fox Hill...
